Jose Piña Lopez

1942 - 2026

José Piña Lopez, known to many as Joe, was a master blacksmith, inventor, legendary figure in the farrier industry, and beloved father and grandfather. A man of many talents, with a flair and rhythm that defied description, José was truly one of a kind, much like the Lopez-style clincher he invented, considered by many farriers the finest tool of its kind.

Born in Tuxpan, Nayarit, Mexico, in 1942, José arrived in the United States in his mid-teens and settled in Santa Maria, California, where he married Yolanda Castellanos Lopez, his beloved wife of 54 years. For more than five decades, José devoted his ingenuity to the ancient art of blacksmithing, beginning at G.E. Forge & Tool as its only employee. Together with Yolanda, he established Lopez Farrier Tools & Rebuilds, later joined by their children, earning a reputation for innovation and remarkable craftsmanship. Alongside his inventions, much of his work was devoted to rebuilding. As Yolanda once said, “He loves to take something that is broken and bring it back.”

A local style icon and extraordinary cook, Yolanda was also José’s beloved dance partner. They passed their love of salsa to their eldest grandchildren, who began dancing alongside them as small children and never stopped. From the anvil to the dance floor, José possessed an extraordinary command of movement, shaping steel with strength and precision and dancing with effortless grace and rhythm. Following Yolanda’s sudden passing in 2020, his work and dancing slowed, but his passion never faded.

On October 17, 2026, José passed away while dancing among friends at his local Eagles Lodge. He is survived by his children, René, José Jr. (“JJ”), and Angélica, and grandchildren, Dominique, Viana, Cheyenne, Steven, and Jolie. He was preceded in death by his beloved Yolanda.

As steel has long been a backbone of civilization, José was a backbone of his family, leaving a monumental absence we can never fill, only learn to grow and dance around.

A Celebration of Life service honoring José will be held on Monday, November 9, 2026, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. at the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

A reception will immediately follow at the same location, until 4:00 p.m.
