Herb Gerfen, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, engineer, pilot, and pillar of the Santa Maria Valley community, passed away peacefully on May 7, 2026, in Santa Maria, California, surrounded by his family. He was 96 years old.

Herb was born on February 17, 1930, in Glendale, California, to John and Frieda Gerfen. In 1950, he answered his country's call by serving in the United States Navy, earning an honorable discharge in 1955. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo in June 1962, before beginning a career and a life in Santa Maria that would span more than six decades.

In Santa Maria, Herb built a career marked by dedication to public service. He served as Assistant Director of Public Works – Engineering for the City of Santa Maria, then as District Engineer for Santa Maria Public Airport. In 1979, he founded Skyway Engineering, which he led as President until his retirement in 2005.

His contributions extended well beyond his office: He was honored as Citizen of the Year by the Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce, and served as President of the Central Coast Chapter of the American Public Works Association, President of the Santa Maria Valley Economic Development Association, Co-Chairman of the Joint Water Committee, and as a long-term member of the Santa Maria Airport Board of Directors and Santa Maria Museum of Flight. He also proudly served as a long-time advisor to the Cal Poly Engineering department.

Herb's personal life was equally full. He married JoAnn Kriese in 1959, and together they welcomed their son Craig. He later found the love of his life in Sonja, a fellow pilot who shared his passion for flight and adventure. They were happily married for nearly 41 years, from 1984 until Sonja's passing in 2025.

An avid pilot, Herb could often be found in the skies above the Central Coast. On the ground — or on the water — he brought the same enthusiasm to skiing, fishing, camping, golf, and photography. He was a man who loved being outdoors, loved his community, and loved his family above all.

Zellanna “Zanni” LeJoy Dyer, 75, passed from this life into the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on April 28, 2026, in Santa Barbara, California.

Zanni was born on September 7, 1950, in Lincoln, Nebraska. She became a longtime Central Coast resident, living in Santa Maria since 1983 and spending her final years in Lompoc, California—a place she proudly called home.

She was an amazing mom, a loyal friend, and a woman who loved deeply and gave freely. Zanni was married to the love of her life, Patrick, for 25 years until his passing in 1995. In a story that perfectly reflected their kind of love, they were married on their very first date—and spent the next 25 years inseparable and devoted to one another.

Zanni had a vibrant personality and a contagious sense of humor. She was a jokester who loved telling jokes that would make you blush, and her laughter had a way of filling every room. She wasn’t just a mom to her own children—she became “Momma” to countless friends over the years. Many who grew up around her called her Mom, and she loved them as if they were her own.

She had a special gift for making people feel at home, and nowhere was that more evident than around her table. She loved cooking spaghetti dinners for her son’s football team and took great joy in feeding “ALL THEM BOYS,” making sure no one left hungry and everyone felt like family. She was always there with a hug, a listening ear, or whatever someone needed in the moment—even if it meant giving her last dollar.

She was the best cook in the world in the eyes of her family, always making sure everyone was fed, cared for, and knew they were loved. Her home was a place of comfort, warmth, and belonging.

She was a devoted wife to Pat, a loving Momma to Ruby and Mike, Tina, and Mary; a proud MiMi to Jazmynn, Kyleigh, Caitlin, Seth, and Abigail; and a cherished GiGi to Hunter, Lilly, Kaiden, and Carson.

Zanni was deeply loved by her family and will be profoundly missed.

Her faith in Jesus was strong and steady, and it shaped the way she lived and loved. While her absence leaves a deep ache, her family finds peace in knowing she is now fully restored, in the presence of her Savior—and, as they like to imagine, fishin’ with Daddy in heaven.

Graveside Services will be 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 13, 2026 in the original section of the Santa Maria Cemetery.

We love you, Momma… and we will see you again.

EUGENE SMITH

1941 - 2026

Eugene Smith, 84, passed away on April 19, 2026, in Nipomo, California. Born on December 13, 1941, in Louisiana, Eugene lived a full and industrious life marked by dedication to his family, career, and passions.

Eugene built a remarkable career spanning over four decades as an excavation expert, home builder, and developer. His work left a lasting impact on the communities he served and reflected his commitment to excellence and hard work. Beyond his professional achievements, Eugene was known for being a good provider who cherished time spent with his loved ones and friends.

A car enthusiast at heart, Eugene found joy in his passion for automobiles. Whether discussing cars or enjoying time with his host of friends, he embraced life with enthusiasm and warmth.

Eugene was predeceased by his beloved wife, Sandra Elaine Smith, who passed away at the age of 76. He is survived by his son Les Smith (63), daughter Diane Smith (56), grandsons Nathan Smith (37) and Jacob Smith (36), as well as a host of extended family members who will remember him fondly. May Eugene’s memory bring comfort to all who knew him.

Nathan Smith:

He was the kind of man who believed hard work was the answer to almost everything. Tough on the outside, he carried himself with the mindset that if you wanted a good life, you earned it. He never believed in shortcuts, excuses, or taking it easy. One of the last conversations we had, I told him I finally felt like I was getting ahead in life and wanted to take a day off. Without hesitation, he told me that if I wanted a house and a nice car, I should probably be working six days a week instead of five. That was who he was. Always pushing, always working, always believing you could do a little more. More than anything, he inspired the people around him to put their heads down and work hard. A big part of who I am today came from watching the example he set.

He made his living operating heavy equipment and moving dirt building a name for himself through hard work and persistence. He took pride in being the provider for his wife Sandy, keeping alive the older American values he believed in deeply. Manners mattered to him. Respect mattered to him. Hard work mattered most. Underneath his tough exterior though, was a surprisingly compassionate man. Even if he didn’t particularly like someone, if they truly needed help, there was a good chance he would show up for them anyway. He believed people should stand on their own two feet, but he also understood when somebody genuinely needed a hand.

Outside of work, he loved classic cars and took pride in rebuilding them, always enjoying hearing what people thought after he finished another project. He also loved the ocean and diving, especially talking about being underwater among the kelp and fish. Later in life, we bonded over sharing diving stories, and I learned how much he loved it when he was younger. He also had an adventurous side. He loved fast off-road vehicles, dreamed about flying ultralights, and carried a streak of fearlessness his entire life. If something needed to be done, he wasn’t the kind of person who waited around for somebody else to do it. If you were late helping him with a project, chances were, it was already finished by the time you got there.

Some of my favorite memories were simply listening to his stories, especially hearing about the trouble he got into as a teenager, like filling balloons with flammable gas and blowing up a hallway because the static electricity ignited it. I’ll miss swapping stories with him. He was one of a kind.

In 1996, Michael surprised his wife, Lynn, with a Triumph Stag for their wedding anniversary. They named the car Joy, in honor of the many miles of happiness it brought them. Outings with friends, visiting museums and wineries, taking weekend trips, and exploring new destinations—were a special source of happiness. The Stag was originally sienna brown, but Michael painted it a beautiful sapphire blue.

Marcia "June" Stoneburner (Hyatt) was born June 9, 1942 to Harold Brent Hyatt and Mildred Janice Hyatt (Brennan) in Pittsburg, KS. She died peacefully, surrounded by family, on March 25, 2026, in Santa Maria, CA.

June is survived by her son and his wife, David and Wendy Stoneburner of Nipomo, CA; her granddaughter, Sierra Stoneburner of Nipomo, CA; June's siblings, Brent Hyatt, Donna Dean (Hyatt), and Bob Hyatt, all of Santa Maria, CA; as well as cousins, nieces, nephews, and their children. She is preceded in death by both of her parents; her older son, Terry Stoneburner; and two of her siblings, Steve Hyatt and Teresa Hyatt.

June grew up in a family that was on the move and growing. Her father pursued construction work as an electrician during WWII. The family first moved from Kansas to Vanport, OR; from there to Eureka, CA; from there to Selma, OR; from there to McNary, OR, from there to Richland, WA; then to the island of Anacortes, WA; again, back to Eureka, CA; then to Los Alamos, CA. As a married woman, June moved from Los Alamos to Lompoc, CA; and finally spent most of her adult years in Santa Maria, CA.

She was married in 1961 to Ralph A. Stoneburner of Los Alamos, CA and they remained married for 37 years. They raised two sons into adulthood. Although she commendably worked outside the home when needed (fire dispatch, food service, housekeeping, and a family-run janitorial business), June devoted her life primarily to homemaking and the devoted, full-time care of her older, special-needs son, Terry, whom she called Terry-Berry or Terry-Bear, until he died at 59 years old. June's younger son, David, whom she nicknamed Crockett, lives locally and fondly remembers the balanced life she aimed to live despite life's many challenges.

June loved shopping, eating out, cooking, driving here & there, and generously helping others in need. Her hobbies included crossword puzzles, table puzzles, baking, needlepoint, knitting, dabbling in jewelry, social media, listening to music, and sewing.

Here are some quotes that paint a picture of the woman June was known to be:
"She made the best fudge ever!"
"She was very giving...I remember her buying a sewing machine for...Kathy, after hearing that she loved to sew, but couldn't afford one."
"She was very family oriented, always staying connected, even with distant relatives."
"...we were so close. [We] made the same moves..., so we were raised together from the time we were toddlers, and she was more like a little sister than a cousin."

When Terry was about 50 years old, June was asked about raising a special needs son, "Do you have any regrets or wish things could've been different?" She replied, "I wouldn't change a thing! I've never had to deal with empty-nest syndrome, and I've always had my baby here with me. It's been a joy and privilege to raise and care for him!"

June started to study the Bible regularly in 1964. She was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses on December 10, 1966. She thoroughly enjoyed associating with her Christian brothers and sisters, often eating out with them following a meeting for worship. Bible truths that June deeply appreciated include the inestimable value of Jesus Christ's sacrificial death on behalf of the human family, the Bible's promise of a restored future paradise right here on Earth, the resurrection of untold billions to our then-cleansed planet, and the future prospect of living forever without the threat of death. We pray that her hope is fully realized in due course!

While June's surviving family is deeply saddened by her loss, we are thankful and cheerful to have known and loved such a wonderful human being.

Sherree Dominguez, a lifelong resident of Santa Maria, passed away leaving a legacy of laughter, kindness, and unconditional love. Born on November 8, 1981, to Gregorio Dominguez and Belinda Garcia, Sherree was a fixture in her community—from her days playing sports at Santa Maria High to her 14-year career as a bookkeeper.

Sherree’s passion for life was infectious. A talented baker and cake decorator at Foodmaxx and Albertson’s, she took equal joy in coaching youth sports and playing adult softball and dodgeball. Sherree wasn’t just a parent; she was our greatest ally and our favorite source of chaos. She replaced judgment with understanding and lectures with laughter, creating a world where we felt completely safe to be our truest selves. To her, we weren’t just her children—we were her entire universe, and that unconditional love was the gravity that held everything together.

She moved through the world with a permanent, kind smile, treating every stranger like a friend she just hadn't met yet. Whether she was checking in on someone at the grocery store or standing fiercely in our corner, her heart was always wide open. She taught us that being "ordinary" was overrated, and that a little bit of kindness and a lot of silliness could light up any room.

She is survived by her children: Elena (27), Analicia (24), Sebastian (22), Aurora (9), and Kalian (3); her beloved granddaughter, Ellyana (4 Months); her mother, Belinda; and siblings Gregory Jr. (47), Sireena (37), and Jade (28); her nephew Gabriel (22); her nieces Jasmine (19) and Anaya (6). She joins her father, Gregorio, and niece, Nevaeh, in peace.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, March 12, 2026 at Magner-Maloney Funeral Home at 4 PM. Services will be held from 5 PM to 7 PM. Burial will take place Friday, March 13, 2026 at Guadalupe Cemetery at 11AM with a celebration of life from 3 PM - 7 PM at the Veterans’ Memorial Community Center in Santa Maria.

The family extends their deepest gratitude to the first responders who cared for her and to the community for "having her children's backs” during this difficult time, just as Sherree always did.

MARY CASTILLO

1962 - 2026

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved Mary Castillo, who left this world on February 13, 2026.

Mary was born on December 1, 1962, in San Luis Obispo, California. She was raised in Nipomo during her early childhood, a place that always remained part of her story. Over the years she lived in Guadalupe and later returned to Santa Maria, where she built a life centered around her greatest joy: her family.

Mary was funny and quick-witted, always ready with a joke and never afraid to speak her mind. She had a heart of gold and loved deeply. Her daily phone calls to check in on her family, especially her children and grandchildren became part of the rhythm of life with calls filled with love, laughter, updates, and sometimes a little “family news.” Those calls, and that unmistakable voice on the other end of the line, will be deeply missed.

She loved fiercely and fought for those she cared about with all her heart. Her strength, loyalty, and protectiveness defined her. And true to form, she was a proud Dallas Cowboys fan, standing firm in her loyalty no matter the rivalry.

Mary is survived by her loving parents, Adam and Cleotilde Castillo; her loving partner, Ralph Garcia; her children, Daniel Jr., Melissa, Christina, David, Janet, and her baby Vanessa, along with their beloved spouses and partners; her cherished grandchildren, Alex, Nathaniel, Mekenna, Alyssa, Izaiah, Wednesdai, Victoria, Mariah, Alyssa, Izabella, Serenity, Gidget, Harley Quinn, Jakey, Christopher, Arianna, and Marissa and her precious great-grandbaby, Novi; her siblings, Dora Aulbach, Erasmo Castillo, Isabel Christina “Tina” Castillo, Cyndie Clark, and David Castillo; numerous nieces and nephews and her beloved doggies who brought her comfort and joy.
