Sympathy Note

The world grew a little quieter on May 8, 2025, as we said goodbye to Jose M Gonzalez—a son, a brother, a partner, and a light in so many lives. Born on January 12, 1999, in Santa Maria, Jose's journey was marked by love, ambition, and a heart that gave endlessly.

Jose was known for his drive and passion, especially when it came to business and building a better future. He was family-oriented, always putting his loved ones first, and never hesitated to lend a helping hand or offer a word of encouragement. He had a deep love for food, road trips, and good drinks shared with good company. His two dogs, Lucy and Gia, were more than pets, they were his companions and his pride.

He is survived by his loving mother, Veronica Cortez, and his brothers: Christian Cortez, Angel Gonzalez, and Diego Gonzalez. Jose also leaves behind Itsel Chavez, the love of his life, with whom he shared a bond built on trust, laughter, and unconditional love.

Jose lived with intention, always striving for more, not out of restlessness but because he believed in the beauty of life and what it could offer. His selflessness, warmth, and infectious energy touched everyone around him.

Though his time with us was far too short, Jose’s spirit lives on in the countless lives he impacted. He will be remembered with love, honored with gratitude, and missed beyond measure.

Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 29, 2025 in the Chapel of Magner-Maloney Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 30, 2025 at St. John Neumann Church. Interment will follow in the original section of the Santa Maria Cemetery.

Sister Mary Mebane, 89 passed away on Wednesday, May 7 at Marian Convent in Santa Maria. She was born on October 15, 1935 in High Point, North Carolina to John and Betty (Gaut). She was named Betty Carolyn at birth. The family moved to Atlanta, Georgia when her father accepted a position with the Atlanta Journal newspaper. Attending six different grammar schools and two different high schools led to graduation from North Georgia College in Dahlonega, Georgia in 1958 with a BS degree.

Her family were members of the Presbyterian Church, but Mary, ever the seeker of truth, became a Methodist during her college years. She was slated to be a Methodist Medical Missionary; however, she wanted to finish a year of internship in Medical Technology before entering the mission field, so went to Charity Hospital in New Orleans, where much to the horror of her family, she became a Catholic! Her brother David had married a Catholic and Mary wanted to know something about Catholicism. She went to a class at St. Joseph’s parish and decided to be baptized. Her family’s response: “The Mebane’s have always been Presbyterian.”

Mary moved to Sacramento, California where she met a Franciscan priest, William Sisk. He introduced Mary to the Sisters of St. Francis who ministered at Grace Day Home, the first licensed day-care center in California. Mary entered the novitiate at Mount Alverno in Redwood City in 1961 and professed final vows in 1969, taking the name Sister Mary William. In 1981 she earned a Master of Theology degree from the Franciscan School of Theology in Berkeley, California.

Most of her ministries circled round the healthcare field. In 1993 she moved to the Santa Maria area and began ministering as a chaplain at Marian Regional Medical Center until 2011. That year she moved into Marian Convent and continued to support the sick by healing hands ministry (she was a Reiki Master) and by crocheting chemo caps for patients at Mission Hope Cancer Center.

Mary was known for her dry sense of humor as well as her poetic soul. She wrote many poems which have been collected and will be read and pondered for many years to come.

The Vigil Service will take place on Thursday, May 22 at 6 pm and the Mass of Resurrection on Friday, May 23 at 10:30 am. Both services will be in the main chapel at Marian Convent. Donations in Mary’s name may be made to the Food Bank of Santa Maria.

VICTORINA EDER TOLENTINO ACOSTA

1937 - 2025

With deep love and heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved matriarch, Victorina Eder Tolentino Acosta, affectionately known as Toring, on April 9, 2025, at the age of 88.

Victorina Leandra Eder was born on February 25, 1937, in Bacarra, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, to Bernardo Eder and Maria Salacup. Raised alongside her siblings Max, Laura, and Fely, she grew up in a humble farming community. After completing high school, she worked alongside her parents in the rice fields, where her lifelong spirit of resilience and devotion to family began to blossom.

Life was never easy, but Victorina met every challenge with quiet strength, unshakable faith, and boundless love. She worked tirelessly to support her family—selling jewelry, working as a seamstress, and crocheting—sacrificing her own needs so that her children could thrive. Her unwavering support helped send her two eldest daughters to nursing school, and she instilled in all her children the values of hard work, humility, and compassion.

On November 14, 1956, she married Macario Gaspar Tolentino. Together, they raised four daughters—Marina, Trinidad, Heidi (who passed away at 8 months), and Maria—and shared 27 years of marriage until Macario’s passing on May 17, 1983.

In March of that same year, Victorina immigrated to Hawaii and later settled in Santa Maria, California. There, she continued her lifelong commitment to providing for her family—working as a seasonal laborer picking strawberries and sweet peas for Simplot Frozen Company during the day and at a packing house by night. On July 15, 1987, she married Gregorio Acosta and was by his side until his passing on November 14, 1995. She never remarried, instead dedicating herself to helping raise her youngest grandchild, Mika’el, alongside her daughter Maria.

Victorina was the heart of our family—a wellspring of wisdom, warmth, and unconditional love. Her home was a place of comfort, filled with laughter, stories, and the quiet strength that shaped generations.

She is survived by her devoted daughters Marina & Jimmy B, Trinidad & Gilbert V., and Maria and significant other Brandon Cypriano; her six adoring grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren, who brought light and joy to her later years. Her legacy lives on in them—in the love she gave, the lessons she shared, and the example she set every day of her life.

We will miss her deeply, but take comfort in knowing that she now rests in peace, embraced by the love she so generously gave throughout her life.

Her memory will forever be our guiding light.

Visitation will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, May 2, 2025; followed by the Recitation of the Holy Rosary at 6:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Magner-Maloney Funeral Home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 3, 2025 at St. Mary of the Assumption Church. Interment will follow in the Santa Maria Cemetery.

EDWARD "EDDIE" S. HARPER

1958 - 2025

Edward “Eddie” S. Harper, 66, of Santa Maria, California, passed away on April 2, 2025.

Born and raised in Santa Maria, Eddie was a journeyman welder with a talent that went beyond craftsmanship—he turned metal into gifts, each piece carrying the heart and humor that defined him. His garage was more than a workspace; it was a sanctuary where music played loud, projects came to life, and wisdom was passed down with a knowing smile.

Whether firing up the grill for a backyard BBQ, watching football, attending various racing events, or tinkering on a new project, he made sure every moment counted. He took pride in his family, never missing an opportunity to talk about his wife, his three children and their spouses, and his five grandchildren—his greatest joy. To those who knew him, “Papa” wasn’t just a title, it was the role he cherished most.

If ever he went missing, there were only a few places to look—Home Depot, Lowe’s, or in his garage, music humming in the background. He was a mentor, a friend, a pillar of unwavering love and wisdom. His advice was simple yet profound: “Love your family, everything else will take care of itself.”

CAROL "DIANE" PARKER

1947 - 2025

Carol ‘Diane’ Parker was the only child born to Jules and Mary Yurashus, on June 18, 1947. Diane was born in Bethesda, Maryland. As Jules was in the US Navy, they qualified for Naval Base Housing and resided in a 22 room quonset hut, set aside for their family. During Maryland’s harsh winters, Diane loved to play with her pet duck, Quacky, and her dog, Duchess. They lived, for two years in a child’s dreamland, right at the edge of Camp Webster, which was a secret facility then and remains a secretive destination til this day. Near their home was a beautiful beach that Diane spoke fondly of, until recent day.

Diane enjoyed many adventures with her little Navy family, including a short span of living in the Philippines (Subic Bay), as well as a span of living in Caracas, Venezuela. It was in Caracas that Jules and Mary developed a relationship with an Austrian Countess, Lilly DeDugrun and her husband Nacho. Lilly became Diane’s Godmother. Diane had many fond memories of Lilly and visits with her throughout the years.

The Yurashus family eventually settled in Yorba Linda, CA. Diane’s mother, Mary, worked as a secretary for Richard Nixon School (the site that houses the Nixon Presidential Library today). When Diane was in the 6th grade, she came rushing home one day to proclaim that their school band played for the president’s visit. “The president sat right in front of me when we played our violins for him!” Diane studied music and voice at Stephen’s College in Columbia, MO., where she received a degree in music. Music and the arts played a consistent and important role throughout Diane’s life.

It was through Diane’s mother, Mary, that she met Ken Parker, her future husband. He was a teacher at the school for which she worked. One evening, Mary brought Ken home for dinner. From that point on, Ken and Diane were inseparable and married on April 3, 1970. Shortly after their marriage, Ken and Diane moved to Mainz, Germany, where Ken worked as a school counselor for the Department of Defense Schools. Their talents were used there for four years. They also had their first child, Andrea Noelle in this period.

Upon return to California, Ken finished his graduate studies with USC and Diane worked night school on the USC campus. Their second child, Joshua David, was born in 1976. After several moves through jobs at various California school districts, the little family moved to Orcutt, CA., where they have resided ever since. OUSD was a dream district for Ken and Diane. It was in 1981 that their third child, Jennifer Lara Elizabeth was born. Travel was a constant part of Diane’s life and she loved to take her family to various places, both in and out of the state. She inspired a love of travel, and learning through travel, in all three of her children.

Diane held several teaching positions throughout her lifetime. She enjoyed working as an assistant for special education in Orcutt Union School District. After this, she worked for Santa Maria Joint Union High School District as an independent study teacher and teacher for home and hospital students. Diane truly enjoyed working with students and was a life- long learner.

Outside of work, Diane loved raising her children and was very proud of all of their accomplishments. She was ecstatic about her seven grandchildren: Jordan, Natalia, Emiliy, Aidan, Emma, Nicolai and Giana. They were her world and she loved to spend time with them. Music was also a huge part of her life, as well. Her Christian faith was of extreme importance to her. She enjoyed singing everyday, and most importantly, brought a lot of music to any church which she attended. Diane took her music and musical talent everywhere. It was not uncommon to find her warming up her vocal chords around the house before a musical ‘gig’. Diane’s love, determination and adventurous spirit will be missed. Heaven gained another beautiful voice with her passing from this earth.

- A Rosary will be held for Diane on April 14, 2025, at 6:00 pm, at Magner Maloney Mortuary. Her funeral mass will be held at Saint Louis de Montfort, on April 15, 2025, at 10:00 am. Burial and reception will follow.

-In lieu of flowers, donations may be made, in Diane’s name, to the Unbound at
unbound.org/donate. This is a foundation that supports children, worldwide.

LAVAUN RAE RETHMEIER CAMPBELL

1930 - 2025

LaVaun was born December 26th, 1930 in Dunlap, Iowa. She may have been a farm kid, but she loved to read and knew at an early age that she wanted to be a teacher. She also knew she wanted to explore the world outside of her hometown area. Thus began many adventures.

LaVaun’s teaching career spanned 37 years and several states. After earning a one-year teaching certificate from Iowa State Teacher’s College, she started her career in a one-room country school where she taught kindergarten through 8th grade for three years. She then took a one-year teaching position at the Army Ordinance Depot in Igloo, SD, where she taught first grade. This was followed by another one-year first grade teaching position in Powell, Wyoming. During this time, she also earned a two-year teaching certificate from Black Hills Teacher’s College by taking summer classes.

During her time in South Dakota, she met her future husband, William (Bill) Campbell, who lived in Custer. They married June 4th, 1955, in Dunlap, Iowa, and started married life in Pocomoke City, Maryland, where Bill finished his Navy enlistment. They returned to Custer where they lived for six years. During this time, Bruce was born in 1956 and Sandra in 1961.

In early 1962, the family moved to Tucson, Arizona, where they lived for about 7 years. LaVaun returned to teaching school as a substitute teacher and continued her higher-level education at the University of Arizona.

In 1968, the family moved to California, bought a house in Simi Valley and established deep roots in the community. LaVaun served as a substitute teacher while continuing her education, eventually earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from California State University Northridge. She was then hired in a full-time position in the Simi Valley Unified School District (SVUSD) where she taught at Crestview Elementary and Katherine Elementary before landing at Justin Elementary where she taught for about 20 years until her retirement in 1996. It was her pride and joy to serve as first grade teacher for her three grandsons, Jason, David and Evan. While she was Grandma all the time, at school she was strictly Mrs. Campbell.

LaVaun had a deep love for children, and she was passionate about teaching and the educational system. Throughout her teaching career, LaVaun was involved in various educational associations, councils and committees. She was voted favorite teacher as reported in the Daily News in June 1987, recognized as SVUSD Teacher of the Month in June 1988, received a PTA Honorary Service Award for 1990-1991, and received the distinguished PTA Golden Oak Service Award for 1995-1996.

LaVaun became involved in Girl Scouts in South Dakota, even before Sandra was born, at the invitation of her mother-in-law. Together they attended a national Girl Scout convention, which left a lasting impression on LaVaun. Years later LaVaun served as a Girl Scout leader in California for about seven years. One of her favorite memories was teaching a group of young girls to make homemade bread and jelly from scratch. LaVaun learned early on that Bruce loved the outdoors, so she made sure her son got involved in Boy Scouts and in a backpacking club at school. For both of her children, she served as a Simi Valley High School Band Booster.

Wherever she lived, LaVaun was also involved in her local church. She had a long history with the Simi Valley United Methodist Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher for young children and leader for adult studies for many years. She also served on the education commission and the administrative council, among several other church groups. Her faith was deep and abiding and her church family was very important to her.

LaVaun’s many interests included cooking, gardening, and sewing. After her retirement, LaVaun decided to branch out to learn quilting and took classes through the Simi Valley Senior Center. When she wasn’t busy with these interests, she was often found reading the newspaper, magazines, or books. Born in Waukegan, IL to H.C. “Red” Jr. and Mickey Flannigan Edwards, Sandy originally came to the West Coast to attend Westmont College in Santa Barbara, graduating in 1959.

Following graduation, she became a teacher in the Orcutt Union School District teaching second grade at May Grisham Elementary School, where she met her future husband Larry as he drove a school bus. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Elmo Frank Baca, who left us on December 5, 2024, at the age of 77, following a prolonged illness. Elmo, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, was known for his burly presence and the kind of laugh that was as infectious as it was unforgettable.

Born on March 9, 1947, in Silver City, New Mexico, Elmo grew up with a strong spirit and a zest for life. His father, Frank Oporto Baca was born in Las Palomas, New Mexico and his mother, Lydia Perez Baca was born in Hurley, New Mexico. After graduating from Cobre High School in Bayard, NM, he found his calling as an ironworker and later became a successful bar owner. For the past 35 years, he shared a life full of love, laughter, and adventure with his devoted wife, Peg, in Nipomo, California.

Elmo was a man of many passions. He loved the thrill of hunting, the freedom of riding his Harley, and the camaraderie of trap shooting. But above all, he adored his four-legged family members, spoiling his Rottweilers and Pits with boundless affection.

Elmo leaves behind his cherished family: his beloved wife, Peg and four-legged little girl, Nella; son, Kenny, and his wife, Dora; daughter, Tanya; and grandson, Carlos. Sympathy Note

With great sadness, we announce the passing of Matthew Fleming Jackson, on October 19, 2024, at 40 years old. Matthew, or “Matt” as he preferred, was born on January 21,1984, in Santa Maria, California.

Matt grew up in Santa Maria and graduated from Santa Maria High School. Matt loved a good story, embraced adventure, and made people laugh. As those who were a part of his life know, Matt was smart, unique, thoughtful, and funny.

Matt could, and would, talk to everyone. With a social circle as dynamic as he was, Matt had a knack for making friends. Childhood and high school friends remained in his life through adulthood. Whether at work, a catering job, a coin collector event, a barbecue, a friend’s house, or even a hospital – Matt would meet someone and have an interesting conversation. Just like that, his circle was ever expanding. After his passing, we got a glimpse of just how wide Matt’s reach ran.

If you knew Matt, you also knew he could masterfully weave references from his favorite movies into conversations, he believed hot sauce could be added to any food, and he was firm in his opinion that mustard was a superior condiment. Matt had a soft spot for animals, scaly or furry, it didn’t matter. Reminding Matt of times his mother had to catch his iguana that escaped in his childhood bedroom always made him laugh.

Matt appreciated all things unique and intriguing. As a collector of coins, Matt found their details fascinating. Shortly before he passed away, Matt won a coin at a collecting event. This left Matt beaming. You see, one of the gifts Matt had was his ability to find happiness and peace in things that often went overlooked. Matt loved being outdoors, hiking, camping, gold panning, metal detecting, fishing, cooking, reading history, and exploring. Matt appreciated a good sunset, particularly the kind that left him unable to tell where heaven stopped, and the earth began. Those of us who have seen the movie Forrest Gump will recognize the reference. Matt would have appreciated that.

Matt was an adored son, brother, father, family member, and a friend. Beyond his humor, which Matt often led with, was a person who valued acts of kindness. The brother you wanted to go on an adventure with, Matt made our days fun, and he could always be counted on to celebrate important milestones. On a birthday, Matt was the first to send a greeting to start your day, the moment the clock turned midnight. If he saw something funny, Matt would send it your way. If he wanted to say hello, Matt was known to send a handwritten letter or card. Matt was also proud of being ordained to officiate weddings for his friends and family, which he did. Being included in a wedding was an honor for which Matt rose to the occasion, with his personality and heart woven into each word.

Alongside Matt’s one-of-a-kind personality and wit were his hard work and goals. Matt enjoyed a culinary career, with a talent for embracing beauty in the chaos and complexities of running a kitchen. Matt shined as a chef, particularly with barbecue, which he loved and perfected. Matt often looked happiest when behind a grill, socializing with people he shared his food with. Barbecue aside, we would be remiss not to mention the smile on Matt’s face when someone complimented the soups he carefully created. Matt would appreciate, if not expect, both be mentioned. Opening a food truck was a goal of Matt’s. When able to work on his truck, Matt was uplifted envisioning what it could be.

Matt’s great joy was his daughter, Olivia. Teaching Olivia baby sign language, having an impromptu dance party, and planning new foods to introduce to her, hoping she would share the same joy for food as he did, meant the world to Matt. Matt treasured his time with Olivia and he would have loved to have more. Olivia’s sister, Katana, and brother, Raven, held a special place in Matt’s life, with an ever-present connection as family.

Matt left this world too soon. He will be sorely missed. Our family cherished our time with Matt, as did those who knew him. In Matt’s memory, he would be so pleased if you took a moment to appreciate something beautiful in nature, shared a memorable story about him, sent a handwritten note to make someone smile, or extended an act of kindness.

Matt is survived by his parents, Michael and Margarita Jackson; his siblings and their families, Christina Jackson (Cary Cauley and Lowe Cauley), Alexander Jackson, Patrick Jackson (Sonthida Palasak), Samuel Jackson; his daughter, Olivia Jackson and her mother, Richelle Nevarez; Katana Nevarez; Raven Nevarez; many loving family members; and a multitude of friends.

A memorial will be held for Matthew on Thursday, January 2, 2025, at 1:00 p.m., at the Magner-Maloney funeral home chapel: 600 East Stowell Road, Santa Maria, California. There will be a gathering at the family home thereafter, where everyone who is able to attend is welcome.

Her family was very involved in the First Baptist Church of Wasco where at a young age she dedicated her life to Christ and became a born again Christian. She went to school to become a dental assistant and worked for multiple dentists. A close friend Joan Heinrichs introduced her to Terry Nachtigall in 1979. She fell in love with him rather quickly and was married on February 9, 1980. This February 9th would have been their 45th anniversary. She moved with Terry to Clovis and they lived there until 1983. Jennifer said she would never marry a farmer because Terry was a schoolteacher. But then Terry proceeded to go to work for her father Clay in June of 1983 and became a farmer. The two of them lived in Wasco where they raised their boys Bryant and Sean. In 2007 they moved to Bakersfield which she loved and attended Riverlakes Community Church. In 2013 they purchased a home in Nipomo. She permanently moved to Nipomo in 2017 while Terry went back and forth to farm in Wasco. Terry joined her full time in Fall of 2022. The rest of her days were spent enjoying the Central Coast and the many new friends she made..

Jennifer loved life and never met a stranger. Her favorite place on earth was Maui. She loved animals, especially kitties. She was a passionate and creative person. A deep thinking idealist in many ways. She truly cared about those close to her and the less fortunate in this world. She had a passion and zest about her with a deep desire to explore the world and the ideas and places within it. She loved the Lord and always wanted a deeper relationship with Him. God was bigger than structured religion. She was listening to the Holy Spirit. The Lord was her guide.

Jennifer’s life was full of physical challenges. She struggled with autoimmune diseases and in 2012 was diagnosed with breast cancer. Thanks to the many doctors at CBCC in Bakersfield she beat it and had been cancer free for the past 7 years. This past year she battled liver disease valiantly. She never complained about her conditions but wanted always to find a solution and a cure. Until her last days, even though her fight was long, she remained positive, and her soul found peace and acceptance. She was a fighter and wanted to beat this. She wanted more life to live. God had other plans. He took her home to a place where physical no longer blocks the beautiful spiritual zeal she had.

Jennifer is survived by her husband Terry, son and daughter-in-law, Bryant and Julie, son Sean and his girlfriend Rachel, grand dogs Colby, Sequoia, and Koda. Sister Carol and husband Carl and their children Amanda and Daniel. Brother Greg and his two daughters Stephany and Brittany.
