Sherree Dominguez, a lifelong resident of Santa Maria, passed away leaving a legacy of laughter, kindness, and unconditional love. Born on November 8, 1981, to Gregorio Dominguez and Belinda Garcia, Sherree was a fixture in her community—from her days playing sports at Santa Maria High to her 14-year career as a bookkeeper.

Sherree’s passion for life was infectious. A talented baker and cake decorator at Foodmaxx and Albertson’s, she took equal joy in coaching youth sports and playing adult softball and dodgeball. Sherree wasn’t just a parent; she was our greatest ally and our favorite source of chaos. She replaced judgment with understanding and lectures with laughter, creating a world where we felt completely safe to be our truest selves. To her, we weren’t just her children—we were her entire universe, and that unconditional love was the gravity that held everything together.

She moved through the world with a permanent, kind smile, treating every stranger like a friend she just hadn't met yet. Whether she was checking in on someone at the grocery store or standing fiercely in our corner, her heart was always wide open. She taught us that being "ordinary" was overrated, and that a little bit of kindness and a lot of silliness could light up any room.

She is survived by her children: Elena (27), Analicia (24), Sebastian (22), Aurora (9), and Kalian (3); her beloved granddaughter, Ellyana (4 Months); her mother, Belinda; and siblings Gregory Jr. (47), Sireena (37), and Jade (28); her nephew Gabriel (22); her nieces Jasmine (19) and Anaya (6). She joins her father, Gregorio, and niece, Nevaeh, in peace.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, March 12, 2026 at Magner-Maloney Funeral Home at 4 PM. Services will be held from 5 PM to 7 PM. Burial will take place Friday, March 13, 2026 at Guadalupe Cemetery at 11AM with a celebration of life from 3 PM - 7 PM at the Veterans’ Memorial Community Center in Santa Maria.

The family extends their deepest gratitude to the first responders who cared for her and to the community for "having her children's backs” during this difficult time, just as Sherree always did.

Harold Johnson passed away peacefully in his sleep on February 18, 2026, 26 days after saying goodbye to his loving wife of 74 years. His family knows that he is rejoicing being reunited with Ginger and being welcomed into the Kingdom of Heaven.

He was born on September 8, 1924 to his parents, Erna and Adolph Johnson in Akron, Ohio.  As a depression era child, he learned the value of hard work and grit. As the eldest of five children, he held great responsibility to take care of his family. As such, one of his greatest memories was purchasing a home for his parents and younger siblings to provide them the stability of housing. He held a close relationship with his siblings, especially with his baby sister, Maggie. To have witnessed them, there was never a sweeter sibling relationship.

In 1951 he had the great honor of marrying Mardell Adelee “Ginger” Rogers, who would be his loving wife and ever companion for over 74 years.  They would go on to have some of the greatest adventures and stories to tell over those 74 years. They later welcomed two children, Dale and Teresa into their lives.  After they married, they moved from Ohio to Los Angeles, to ditch the snow and chase the sunshine. Once they retired, they went to build their own oasis in Squaw Valley near Kings Canyon.  For the last 20 years, they resided in Santa Maria, CA.

Always known as the consummate jokester and ice cream connoisseur, Harold never met someone who didn’t immediately like him, especially in his older years. He was a hard worker and never let anything get in his way.  Some of his notable jobs included working on building ships in the Naval ShipYard in Martinez, CA and spending his career at McDonnell Douglas.

Harold grew up in a Christian home and cherished these values. He held his faith, his family and his love for them dearest to his heart.

MARY CASTILLO

1962 - 2026

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved Mary Castillo, who left this world on February 13, 2026.

Mary was born on December 1, 1962, in San Luis Obispo, California. She was raised in Nipomo during her early childhood, a place that always remained part of her story. Over the years she lived in Guadalupe and later returned to Santa Maria, where she built a life centered around her greatest joy: her family.

Mary was funny and quick-witted, always ready with a joke and never afraid to speak her mind. She had a heart of gold and loved deeply. Her daily phone calls to check in on her family, especially her children and grandchildren became part of the rhythm of life with calls filled with love, laughter, updates, and sometimes a little “family news.” Those calls, and that unmistakable voice on the other end of the line, will be deeply missed.

She loved fiercely and fought for those she cared about with all her heart. Her strength, loyalty, and protectiveness defined her. And true to form, she was a proud Dallas Cowboys fan, standing firm in her loyalty no matter the rivalry.

Mary is survived by her loving parents, Adam and Cleotilde Castillo; her loving partner, Ralph Garcia; her children, Daniel Jr., Melissa, Christina, David, Janet, and her baby Vanessa, along with their beloved spouses and partners; her cherished grandchildren, Alex, Nathaniel, Mekenna, Alyssa, Izaiah, Wednesdai, Victoria, Mariah, Alyssa, Izabella, Serenity, Gidget, Harley Quinn, Jakey, Christopher, Arianna, and Marissa and her precious great-grandbaby, Novi; her siblings, Dora Aulbach, Erasmo Castillo, Isabel Christina “Tina” Castillo, Cyndie Clark, and David Castillo; numerous nieces and nephews and her beloved doggies who brought her comfort and joy.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Johnny and Adam Castillo. Her beloved son, Michael Guzman passed shortly after her.

She leaves behind a family who will forever carry her laughter, her strength, her stories, and her unconditional love in their hearts.

Visitation will be 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 28, 2026 in the Chapel of Magner-Maloney Funeral Home

A celebration of life will be held at the Boys and Girls Club also on Saturday, February 28, 2026 at 901 N. Railroad Ave, Santa Maria at 3pm, as we continue to share memories, laughter and stories in her honor.

She also loved her daily crossword puzzles, and was an avid reader. She loved baseball, and was a lifelong loyal San Francisco Giants fan.

She really loved music of all kinds, from Dixieland to Frank Sinatra, who was her very favorite from high school days as a “bobbysoxer” to the present.

In 1974, he was accepted to teach at El Camino Jr. High School in Santa Maria, California. He enjoyed classroom teaching for 26 years. He also taught part-time evening courses at Allan Hancock College for two years. Ruben Lopez retired from teaching in 2000.

In retirement, he continued to enjoy his three lifelong interests: film, jazz, and books. Each day in retirement, he noted how blessed he was to have good health, time, and resources to enjoy his three passions in life.

In addition to his wife Anne, Ruben Lopez is survived by his two wonderful sons, Richard Lopez of Cambridge, Massachusetts and David Lopez with wife Rachelle and their daughter Allesandra.

Ruben’s final request was that no formal memorial service be held.

Sympathy Note

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Christopher Michael Curzon, who died at the age of 59 after a yearlong battle with cancer. He left this world on November 25, 2025.

Born on December 27, 1965 in Arroyo Grande, CA, he grew into a man known for his generous spirit, steady hands, and unwavering willingness to help anyone in need. As a mechanic, he had a gift not only for fixing engines, but for making people feel heard and respected. If something was broken—whether it was a car or someone’s day—he was the first to roll up his sleeves.

Along with his sister, he grew up in the store window at Don’s Variety, his parents’ store. The window was their playpen and the back of the store their yard.  From an early age he had an aptitude for taking things apart and putting them back together. Early signs of his lifelong passion for fixing things.

He loved a good barbecue, and some of the best memories with him were found around a grill, where smoke curled into summer air and he’d insist everyone take seconds. His laughter, easy humor, and warmth made gatherings feel like home.

Even when not at work, you would often find him under the hood of the 18A at the Santa Maria Speedway. He loved being a part of Aaron Bruce’s crew and helping him race for a win.

He always had a boat to take out on the lake or a classic car to cruise with and sometimes he had both. He enjoyed revving up the engines for anyone who would listen or taking you out for a ride you wouldn’t soon forget.

He is survived by his sister, Jennifer Nolan, brother-in-law, Mike Nolan, and niece Jessica Warren, who will forever miss his boisterous laugh and generous heart.

A service to honor his life will be held on Sunday, December 7 at 2:30pm at Oak Park Christian Church in Grover Beach California. Family and friends are invited to attend and share memories, stories, and love.

Though his time with us was far too short, his kindness, humor, and love will live on in every person whose life he touched.

She was an adventurous cook known for her beef bourguignon and lasagna, and even more so for animal birthday cakes, huge batches of Christmas cookies, and banana splits. Her children and grandchildren still make her pecan rolls for special events. Church was also important and she faithfully and consistently practiced her faith.

Gerald “Jerry” Ellis Schmidt Jr., 65, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 14th, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. Jerry was born on June 27th, 1960, in Torrance, CA, and later moved to San Miguel, where he attended Paso Robles High School. A gifted athlete, he earned a football scholarship to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. His team won the National Championship for their division in 1980. He was invited to play for the Dallas Cowboys in 1983. His professional career was brief, but he often reflected on how that path led him exactly where he was meant to be.

Following his football career, Jerry worked briefly at Porsche- Audi until a conversation with a customer changed the course of his life. Inspired by the man’s career in commercial real estate, Jerry got his real estate license and dove headfirst into the industry. In 1989, he was recruited by Jerry Beaver to open a Santa Maria office for Beaver Free Corporation, later known as Pacifica Commercial Realty.

From the 1990s to today, Jerry became one of the Central Coast’s most respected real estate professionals. His notable achievements include representing Hughes Aircraft Company in the sale of 75 acres on Betteravia Road; now home to corporate offices, residential, retail, and the Santa Maria Police Department. He also represented Texaco in the sale of more than 100 acres of land that became a residential community of over 1,000 homes near Blosser Road. He played a key role in bringing Golden State Porcelain to the Columbia Business Center and successfully sold the adjacent former Costco warehouse- twice.

In 2006, Jerry and his partners purchased Pacifica Commercial Realty’s Santa Maria operations and later acquired the firm’s original Santa Barbara brokerage. As Pacifica’s Broker of Record and President, he led Pacifica’s continued growth from its Santa Maria headquarters to its permanent home on South Bradley Road, the former Hometown Buffet.

In addition to brokerage, Jerry brought property management to Pacifica Commercial Realty. Pacifica currently manages over a million square feet of property and continues to grow with the help of an incredible team, including his daughter Sara.

Jerry left a lasting impact on the area he loved through business, but also by giving back to his community. Jerry joined the Police Academy in 2003, where he graduated as Valedictorian. He served as a part time reserve officer and armorer with the Santa Maria Police Department for over 10 years. He sat on the original Police Council Board of Directors in 2007 and was president of the board 2013 and 2015. The Santa Maria Police Council Golf Tournament and Comedy Show was one of his passions that continues to raise money for the Police Department annually.

Jerry’s greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Stephanie, his children, Sara, Danielle and Joshua; son- in-laws Joseph and Mike; his treasured grandchildren Michael, Luca and Ellis; Mother Nancy, and his siblings, Carol, Linda, James and Don. Jerry was an avid hunter and fiercely dedicated father who never missed a sports game, school event or church activity. His sharp wit and signature sarcasm brought laughter to those around him, and his love for attending concerts with his wife created memories that will be cherished forever.

Jerry’s deep love for Jesus kept him grounded throughout his life and especially during his final battle. He fought the good fight with courage, faith and unwavering strength.

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” – Joshua 1:9

A celebration of life will be held for Jerry at Calvary Chapel Santa Maria (2620 Santa Maria Way) on January 17th at 2:00 in the sanctuary.

Isaac Chy Melena, at the age of seventy-four, passed on into eternity to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on Monday, September 22, 2025, at Marian Regional Medical Center in Santa Maria, California.

He was known to his immediate family and close friends as Chy and to co-workers and church family as Isaac. Chy was born and raised in Santa Maria, third generation, the oldest child, to Santos and Charlotte Melena.

He attended Adam Elementary School, El Camino Junior High, and Santa Maria High School. He participated in youth sports, such as baseball and track. When he got older, he played softball, playing shortstop, with his friends and brothers at Hagerman Park. He also coached softball for his daughters and nieces.

As a young person, he worked with his family seasonally throughout California and Oregon. He later worked with his dad in the family's general contracting business, where they built many of Santa Maria’s buildings, which are still up today. In his twenties, he also worked at Vandenberg Air Force Base.

Chy was proud to have worked as a Maintenance Specialist at the Housing Authority for over thirty-nine years. His co-workers remember fun memories and how he was full of life, laughter, and jokes. He got to know the community and enjoyed seeing the younger generations grow.

Although he could not serve in the military due to a childhood illness, he was a great patriot and supporter. He instilled patriotism in his children and loved celebrating the Fourth of July with lots of fireworks.

Chy loved spending time with his family, going camping, and going to the beach. He enjoyed riding his Harley and referred to it as his childhood dream. He was a major fan of the Los Angeles Chargers and Angels. Once he retired, he began to travel to many places, including Mazatlán, to see the Total Solar Eclipse in 2024.

He maintained a routine of running well into his fifties. After work, he ran laps around Preisker Park and participated in the Guadalupe Marathon from Santa Maria. As he got older, he would walk along the Santa Maria River Levee Trail and take his Australian Shepherd Heeler, Jack Theodore, and his Husky, Lady Estrella, with him. One of his pastimes was to barbecue for family and friends. He also enjoyed relaxing by a late-night bonfire in the backyard or at the beach.

Chy was known for his contagious laugh and high-spirited, loving personality. He filled our lives with fun and laughter. He was selfless, kind, compassionate, and had a big heart.

He is survived by his wife, Alma, his children, Pearl, Becky, Gabriel, and Krystal. He also leaves behind his siblings Bob, Joe, Richard, Tina, Jim, and Bill, and their spouses, Stephanie, Cindy, Terri, Victor, Cindy, and Janet. He is also loved by a large family, which includes nieces, great nieces, their children, and his in-laws.

Chy was preceded in death by his parents, Santos and Charlotte; his brother, Mark; his grandparents, Ysabel and Pasquale Melena, Juan and Justa Camacho; and many other family and friends dear to him.

The day after his passing, Santa Maria had a sudden tropical storm with rolling rumbles of thunder and lightning. This was considered a gift from above to his children because Chy loved to hear the thunder, run out to the rain, and watch the lightning light up the sky. On that day, they found this very comforting. We find comfort in knowing that we will see him again.

HE WILL BE GREATLY MISSED

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me… And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also.” –John 14:1-3

“But I do not want you to be uninformed, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with him those who sleep in Jesus.”—1 Thessalonians 4:13-14

Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 3, 2025 in the Chapel of Magner-Maloney Funeral Home.

Funeral Services will be 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 4, 2025 in the Chapel of Magner-Maloney Funeral Home. Interment will be private.

Her life was marked by many years of service in education and leadership. She taught at the grammar school level and the high school level for ten years—at Holy Angels grammar school and St. Francis High School in Sacramento. In 1962 she began fifteen years as teacher, vice-principal and principal at Alverno High School in Sierra Madre, California. She was entrusted with the formation and education of new members of the province for five years in the Los Angeles area.

Leaving the education field, she began working at the Marriage Tribunal of the Archdiocese of San Francisco, a position she held for eighteen years while living at the motherhouse of the province in Redwood City, California. Sympathy Note

Patricia “Pat” Ann Foxen was born in Charleston, West Virginia, on March 30, 1931. She passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family, on August 24, 2025.

As a teenager, Pat met her future husband, Donald, at dance class. They stepped into life together in 1952 and never missed a beat for the next 65 years. Their love carried on well beyond his passing, lasting a lifetime. They raised six children in Hacienda Heights, California, filling their home with both laughter and the kind of chaos only a large family can bring.

Pat was the type of person you only had to meet once to love forever. She had a gift for rolling up her sleeves, pitching in, and somehow making it all look effortless. She spent decades serving her community, most notably through 30 years at Cottage Hospital, the New-to-You shop, and the Solvang Auxiliary. Her dedication was recognized when she earned the President’s Volunteer Service Award for Lifetime Achievement, honoring more than 15,000 hours given to Cottage Health Auxiliary Volunteers. Whether she was organizing, volunteering, spending time with her grandchildren, or baking her legendary snickerdoodles, Pat did it with a quick wit, a sense of humor, and an open heart. They just don’t make them like her anymore.

When Don retired from the Sheriff’s Department, they built their dream home in Woodstock Ranch in Santa Ynez — a gathering place where memories were made around long tables, full plates, and even fuller hearts for over 30 years. After Don’s passing, Pat continued to live independently in Santa Maria. She never slowed down — keeping up with Wordle, crosswords, thrift shop schedules, and pricing items right up until the week she left this earth.

Her spirit will be remembered in her laugh, her sparkle, her steadfast kindness, and yes — in those homemade rolls no one could ever quite replicate. She leaves behind a family that adored her beyond measure: children Kathy, David, Diane, and Mike; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and her sister, Sue Rock. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband Don, daughter Donna, and son Jim.

In true Pat fashion, she requested no services. Instead, her family invites you to celebrate her amazing life in a way that makes you smile — perhaps with a snickerdoodle in hand, a crossword puzzle nearby, or by lending a helping hand to someone who needs it.

A life of courage, kindness, and quiet resilience.

Scott was joyful, grateful and appreciative in life, but life challenged him greatly from an illness he developed at the young age of 22, after proudly serving in the United States Air Force as a crew chief for a fighter squadron.

Yet, he faced his illness not as a weakness, but as a relentless storm he weathered with profound bravery.

Scott was born to Margaret and Ray Burks in Santa Clara California, June 11th 1957, a joyous gift from above, Scott was a happy go lucky boy in childhood joining many clubs and attending social activities that kept him busy with friends, but his favorite wish was always to come to the central coast to visit his same age cousin and boyhood prankster partner Steven Jones, they were inseparable later attending St Joseph basketball games where Steve played center, finding the newest addition for Scott’s hot rod car and playing their favorite music, we think they surely must be together once again.

Scott loved fast cars and speed, spending lots of time in his younger years working on numerous project cars that he raced and truly made amazing!

In 1977 he married his high school sweetheart, Catherine Elizabeth whom he met through his cousin Steven and they set off to an assignment beginning with a station at Elgin AFB in Florida.

In 1978 they welcomed their only child, a beautiful little girl they named Jennifer Ann.

Scott’s illness never defined him, but his response to it shaped his quiet strength and his faith sustained him.

Those who knew Scott saw beyond his struggles to the person he truly was, a kind and gentle soul with a fierce and witty sense of humor. He had an unwavering love for his family.

May the bravery, courage and example Scott set in life fill our hearts and keep us inspired with love for others even during health struggles and life’s hardships.

Scott was preceded in death by his loving parents and leaves behind his beloved daughter, Jennifer Amador and cherished grandchildren Ezra, Savanah and Seleste as well as a younger brother David Burks .

On Thursday, August 28, 2025 the 12:00 p.m. Mass at St Mary's of the Assumption Catholic Church will be celebrated in honor of Scott. Graveside service following mass at 1:30 in the Santa Maria, South Lawn.

Sympathy Note

Laura Diane Hendricks, was born on September 21, 1976 in Valencia, CA to Danny and Mary Hendricks. At the age of 48, and after a two year battle with cancer, Laura passed away on July 30, 2025. She was surrounded by family and close friends.

She is survived by her son-Mason, father-Danny, siblings-David & wife Yvonne, Michael & wife Bree, along with many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her mother-Mary Hendricks.

Laura moved to Santa Maria in 1980, where she attended Joe Nightingale & Lakeview Jr High. She graduated from Righetti High School in 1994 and modeled for Copeland’s Sports in San Luis Obispo.

She went on to attend Allan Hancock College, where she played soccer for 2 years on their first ever women’s team. A career in retail led her to work for Vons, Costco, and Spencer’s, where she worked in many departments including bakery, pharmacy and service deli. Co-workers and customers alike would have to agree that she had the gift of gab. This is where she met many lifelong friends.

Laura was truly an old soul. She admired antiques and old cars, particularly vintage vehicles owned by her Pop. Going to car shows with family & friends was one her favorite pastimes. She also took much pride in her 1993 Toyota pickup, which she would brag, “still runs today”.

She preferred home cooked meals; unless, it was french fries, fresh baked bread, or her absolute favorite… nachos. Whether she followed an exact recipe or created a meal with her own twist, she thoroughly enjoyed cooking.

Her spontaneous nature allowed many to experience last minute adventures with her; she was a true partner in crime. Blues music may have been her favorite, however, it wasn’t uncommon for her to sing many songs on the radio. If she didn’t know the words, she would make them up, just another of her humorous traits. If you were fortunate enough to have her leave you a singing voicemail, treasure it, and consider yourself special.

She found happiness in the little things. At Christmastime, a drive around the block to see decorated houses with lights always brought a smile to her face. Above all things, she thrived at being a mother. She loved to volunteer for field trips, parades, and projects that nurtured and created memories with Mason. She was creative in putting together Halloween costumes and outfits for school dress up days. She loved taking photos and short videos of Mason and posting or sending to friends and family. She truly got a kick out of this.

Her cheerful disposition and ability to make others laugh with jokes or stories would usually start with a one minute intro, then quickly turn into a one hour story. She loved to chat, about anything and everything. Two hour conversations were not uncommon and this is where some of us got to experience the softer, serious, kind & loving nature of Laura.

She will be remembered for her smile and laugh (lovingly called a “snort”), quick-wit, sarcasm, generosity, singing, dance moves, and the fun-loving human that she was.

A celebration of life will be held on:

Saturday, September 13, 2025 at 3:00 pm, in the barn at 4860 Paint Horse Trail, Orcutt. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the go fund me account started for her son Mason, this is posted on Laura’s Facebook page.

Maria B. Roe, 85 years old, of Santa Maria, CA, passed away quietly and surrounded by family on July 18, 2025.

Maria was born on March 20, 1940 in Herzogenaurach, Germany, the daughter of Johann and Lucia Weiss. She worked for Adidas and Puma, both headquartered in her hometown. As much as she loved Germany and missed her family, she happily called Santa Maria her home for over 60 years.

Maria married the love of her life, Thurman Roe on December 17, 1971. They lived a beautiful life together, raising their family and supporting each other through life’s challenges. They loved visiting family in Germany, traveling in their motorhome, and spending time with their kids and grandkids at home. They laughed and enjoyed every day together until Thurman’s passing in 2012.

Maria was talented in so many things. She crocheted beautiful blankets, clothes, decorations, and toys that she lovingly gave to family and friends. She was a wonderful cook and baker and we were so lucky to learn from her. She had two green thumbs and the house was filled with so many plants, that it felt like growing up in a jungle. She made jams and jellies and canned fruits and vegetables that she grew in her garden. She even won awards at the fair with her giant zucchinis and beautiful dolls and blankets. These last few years, she was still so excited each spring to plant her tomatoes and peppers and spent every morning tending to her garden.

She made it through so many hardships. She lost all of her siblings, two of her children, and her beloved husband. She survived cancer twice, five back surgeries, and two broken hips. She continued to get up and take care of herself as long as she could. She was the strongest person we’ve ever known. She loved God and her church and she loved her family. She was the happiest when she was surrounded by her children and grandchildren. We’re at peace knowing that she’s in Heaven with Pop and Angie now.

Maria is survived by her son David Simmons (Lori), daughter Karen Rietzke (Brian), son-in-law Troy Barton, and grandchildren, Cindy Hoyos (Jeff), Jennifer Simmons (Maria), Rachel Acosta (Adam), Jessica Jorde (Thomas), Jordan Rietzke, Brandon Barton, Ashley Lewis (Tony), many great-grandchildren, and her beloved nieces and nephews in Germany.

She was preceded in death by her husband Thurman Roe, daughter Angie Barton, son Timmy Simmons, granddaughter Astacia Simmons, great grandson Isaac Hoyos, her parents, Johann and Lucia Weiss, her brother and his wife, Fritz and Erica Weiss, her sisters Betty Wimmer and Gretel Gerstner, and brother Ludwig Weiss.

Jose was known for his drive and passion, especially when it came to business and building a better future. He was family-oriented, always putting his loved ones first, and never hesitated to lend a helping hand or offer a word of encouragement. Jose lived with intention, always striving for more, not out of restlessness but because he believed in the beauty of life and what it could offer. His selflessness, warmth, and infectious energy touched everyone around him.

Though his time with us was far too short, Jose’s spirit lives on in the countless lives he impacted. He will be remembered with love, honored with gratitude, and missed beyond measure.

Sister Mary Mebane, 89 passed away on Wednesday, May 7 at Marian Convent in Santa Maria. She was born on October 15, 1935 in High Point, North Carolina to John and Betty (Gaut). She was named Betty Carolyn at birth. The family moved to Atlanta, Georgia when her father accepted a position with the Atlanta Journal newspaper. Attending six different grammar schools and two different high schools led to graduation from North Georgia College in Dahlonega, Georgia in 1958 with a BS degree.

Her family were members of the Presbyterian Church, but Mary, ever the seeker of truth, became a Methodist during her college years. She was slated to be a Methodist Medical Missionary; however, she wanted to finish a year of internship in Medical Technology before entering the mission field, so went to Charity Hospital in New Orleans, where much to the horror of her family, she became a Catholic! Her brother David had married a Catholic and Mary wanted to know something about Catholicism. She went to a class at St. Joseph’s parish and decided to be baptized. Her family’s response: “The Mebane’s have always been Presbyterian.”

Mary moved to Sacramento, California where she met a Franciscan priest, William Sisk. He introduced Mary to the Sisters of St. Francis who ministered at Grace Day Home, the first licensed day-care center in California. Mary entered the novitiate at Mount Alverno in Redwood City in 1961 and professed final vows in 1969, taking the name Sister Mary William. In 1981 she earned a Master of Theology degree from the Franciscan School of Theology in Berkeley, California.

Most of her ministries circled round the healthcare field. In 1993 she moved to the Santa Maria area and began ministering as a chaplain at Marian Regional Medical Center until 2011. That year she moved into Marian Convent and continued to support the sick by healing hands ministry (she was a Reiki Master) and by crocheting chemo caps for patients at Mission Hope Cancer Center.

Mary was known for her dry sense of humor as well as her poetic soul. She wrote many poems which have been collected and will be read and pondered for many years to come.

The Vigil Service will take place on Thursday, May 22 at 6 pm and the Mass of Resurrection on Friday, May 23 at 10:30 am. Both services will be in the main chapel at Marian Convent. Donations in Mary’s name may be made to the Food Bank of Santa Maria.

VICTORINA EDER TOLENTINO ACOSTA

1937 - 2025

With deep love and heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved matriarch, Victorina Eder Tolentino Acosta, affectionately known as Toring, on April 9, 2025, at the age of 88.

Victorina Leandra Eder was born on February 25, 1937, in Bacarra, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, to Bernardo Eder and Maria Salacup. Raised alongside her siblings Max, Laura, and Fely, she grew up in a humble farming community. After completing high school, she worked alongside her parents in the rice fields, where her lifelong spirit of resilience and devotion to family began to blossom.

Life was never easy, but Victorina met every challenge with quiet strength, unshakable faith, and boundless love. She worked tirelessly to support her family—selling jewelry, working as a seamstress, and crocheting—sacrificing her own needs so that her children could thrive. Her unwavering support helped send her two eldest daughters to nursing school, and she instilled in all her children the values of hard work, humility, and compassion.

On November 14, 1956, she married Macario Gaspar Tolentino. Together, they raised four daughters—Marina, Trinidad, Heidi (who passed away at 8 months), and Maria—and shared 27 years of marriage until Macario’s passing on May 17, 1983.

In March of that same year, Victorina immigrated to Hawaii and later settled in Santa Maria, California. There, she continued her lifelong commitment to providing for her family—working as a seasonal laborer picking strawberries and sweet peas for Simplot Frozen Company during the day and at a packing house by night. On July 15, 1987, she married Gregorio Acosta and was by his side until his passing on November 14, 1995. She never remarried, instead dedicating herself to helping raise her youngest grandchild, Mika’el, alongside her daughter Maria.

Victorina was the heart of our family—a wellspring of wisdom, warmth, and unconditional love. Her home was a place of comfort, filled with laughter, stories, and the quiet strength that shaped generations.

She is survived by her devoted daughters Marina & Jimmy B, Trinidad & Gilbert V., and Maria and significant other Brandon Cypriano; her six adoring grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren, who brought light and joy to her later years. Her legacy lives on in them—in the love she gave, the lessons she shared, and the example she set every day of her life.

We will miss her deeply, but take comfort in knowing that she now rests in peace, embraced by the love she so generously gave throughout her life.

Her memory will forever be our guiding light.

Visitation will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, May 2, 2025; followed by the Recitation of the Holy Rosary at 6:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Magner-Maloney Funeral Home.

EDWARD "EDDIE" S. HARPER

1958 - 2025

Edward “Eddie” S. Harper, 66, of Santa Maria, California, passed away on April 2, 2025.

Born and raised in Santa Maria, Eddie was a journeyman welder with a talent that went beyond craftsmanship—he turned metal into gifts, each piece carrying the heart and humor that defined him. His garage was more than a workspace; it was a sanctuary where music played loud, projects came to life, and wisdom was passed down with a knowing smile.

Whether firing up the grill for a backyard BBQ, watching football, attending various racing events, or tinkering on a new project, he made sure every moment counted. He took pride in his family, never missing an opportunity to talk about his wife, his three children and their spouses, and his five grandchildren—his greatest joy. To those who knew him, “Papa” wasn’t just a title, it was the role he cherished most.

If ever he went missing, there were only a few places to look—Home Depot, Lowe’s, or in his garage, music humming in the background. He was a mentor, a friend, a pillar of unwavering love and wisdom. His advice was simple yet profound: “Love your family, everything else will take care of itself.”

His legacy will be honored at a memorial service on April 24, 2025, at 11 AM at Christian Family Church of God in Santa Maria.
